PTA Chairman, Retired Maj General Hafizur Rehman, briefed the Standing Committee on the Cabinet Secretariat that the use of VPNs has increased in recent days. He also informed the committee that his team is working to block illegal VPNs soon, allowing only legal and registered ones.
He added that VPN usage spiked after the government banned the social media website X in February.
According to a private VPN website, Top10VPN, VPN usage increased by 131 percent following the ban on X.
The PTA head also informed the committee that the usage of X is comparatively lower compared to other social media platforms.
The PTA Head suggested banning all VPN websites to overcome illegal usage. However, the committee chairman responded by saying that such an action would negatively affect IT businesses that rely on VPNs.
