On August 5, 2024, history will remember the end of a leader’s 15-year legacy. Today, Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has lost her power and stepped down. This happened because of widespread student protests in Bangladesh against the quota system for civil service jobs. The protests began in July and escalated into large-scale rallies.
Approximately 200 students were killed during these protests, but the movement only grew stronger over time. The police were accused of violently attacking student groups, leading to international condemnation.
In January, Sheikh Hasina was reappointed as Prime Minister, but the opposition denied the results and boycotted the vote. Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was killed by the military in 1975. After this incident, she returned to Bangladesh after six years, joined Khaleda Zia’s BNP party, and began her political struggle, but this alliance did not last long.
She was first elected as Prime Minister in 1996. She faced tough times after losing to Zia and was also sentenced to jail on corruption charges. Despite this, she played a key role in lifting Bangladesh’s economy. However, in recent years, the people of Bangladesh have faced high unemployment, and the government has not taken this issue seriously.
Now, after Hasina’s resignation, protestors have entered the Prime Minister’s residence, and pictures of the protestors are circulating widely on social media, showing them celebrating their success. The Army Chief has addressed the nation, announcing that the country’s system will now be operated by the military until the next government comes to power.
