Pakistan is a country where cleanliness is a significant challenge. Garbage can be seen on every corner of roads and even in streets. This situation is not restricted to villages and small cities.
Even major cities like Karachi and Lahore have been facing this problem for many years. Every government talks about addressing this issue, but the problem remains unchanged, with little visible effort.
Pakistan faces challenges in terms of waste management infrastructure. Approximately 49.6 million tons of solid waste are produced each year, and this amount is increasing by 2.4% annually.
In this context, Pakistan is also struggling with pollution issues because much of the waste is burned. Moreover, about 36 million tons of food are wasted.
To address this situation, a new tax has been proposed in Punjab by the Cabinet Standing Committee on Finance and Development. However, it still needs approval from the cabinet. This tax will be part of a larger scheme to outsource solid waste management systems across Punjab.
