Antibiotics are mainly used to treat superbugs that cannot be treated without antibiotics. According to studies, the excessive use of antibiotics can lead to resistance against various harmful bacteria. Antibiotic use should be limited, and an average of 9 daily doses of antibiotics per year is recommended.
In Pakistan, the use of antibiotics is often unnecessary. People are taking antibiotics even for the flu, which is a viral disease, and antibiotics have no effect on viruses. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has initiated actions against the unnecessary use of antibiotics. The CEO of DRAP has started taking action against the sale of antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription.
In other countries, there are strict laws governing the sale of medicines, and they do not allow the sale of antibiotics or any drugs without a prescription. However, in Pakistan, there is no strict law regulating the sale of medicines.
The CEO of DRAP added that there should be proper laws and regulations to control the sale of antibiotics without a prescription. Action will also be taken against doctors who prescribe excessive antibiotics to their patients.
Furthermore, all pharmaceutical companies will be required to follow ethical marketing strategies to curb the excessive use of antibiotics. Those who do not follow the instructions will face legal action.
