No Relief for Karachiites: New Tax Imposed by K-Electric

It seems like the people of Karachi are far from relief as a new burden of tax has been imposed by K-Electric (KE). The decision was made jointly by KE and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to add municipal utility charges to the monthly electricity bills.

KE confirmed the implementation of an additional 400 Rs municipal tax starting from August 1, 2024, in all areas except the cantonment areas. This fund will be used by the Municipal Utility Charges Tax (MUCT) for improving infrastructure and other important projects in Karachi.

Consumers who use 100 units or less per month are exempt from this tax. Those consuming 100-200 units will have to pay 20 Rs per month. Those who consume 200-300 units will have to pay 40 Rs. Consumers using 300-400 units will pay 100 Rs. Those consuming 400-500 units will pay 125 Rs, and those using 500-600 units will pay 150 Rs. Consumers using 600-700 units will pay 175 Rs, and so on.

Additionally, all industrial and commercial consumers will have to pay 400 Rs per month.
