People in Pakistan are facing significant difficulty paying their electricity bills due to a recent price hike and the addition of taxes to the bills. This situation directly impacts the lower and middle-class communities, many of whom are struggling to afford essentials in order to cover their bills.
Last week, a tragic incident occurred when one brother killed another due to the stress of high electricity bills. Additionally, a woman jumped into a drain because of the financial strain of paying her electricity bill.
In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the Power Division to extend the payment deadline for electricity bills by 10 days for July and August.
For example, if the original payment date for a July bill was August 2, it will now be extended to August 12. The same extension will apply to the August bills, with the new payment date shifting from September 2 to September 12.
Furthermore, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is taking action and compiling a report on complaints related to extra charges on bills from April to June 2024.
